As we are now declared, "Buddies" together, Joe, Leroy, Abel and myself call our parents and inform them that "we'll be Home for the weekend and Abel's Mom informs us that she will come and drive us.
Instead, Abel commandeers the 1949 Cad. after a few Beers at her house and we are on our way to my Dad's. He sure as hell surprises us with a huge table of Kalua Pig, lomi salmon and all the trimmings including a tub of Iced down Beer. My sister, Virginia was there to and got Leroy's attention as he later told me, "Bill, I think I'm in love with your sister".
After the meal and Beer my Dad puts his arm around Leroy and me and with tears in his eyes says, "you boys are going to war, it's going to be rough but you'll come back home and when you do, I'll be here again with a table full like this one and we will rejoice and thank the lord for your safe return, God Bless you all."
We then went to Leroy's home where he's single Mom welcomes us saying, "Leroy's home is your home too my boys" and again brought out food, but this time the beverage was Koolade, which we politely held in our hands pretending to be drinking it with delight. She was so gracious, full of love that showed for her Son, she had her walls covered with his school and childhood pictures. We all adopted her as our 2nd Mom.
Joe was from Maui so we couldn't go there however, he enjoyed all our homes as we all welcomed him. Not only
that, when I first met him, He asked where was I from and I told him from Hawaii Island but my Mom was from
Maui, He asked, where? and I told him her name and city, He replied excitedly, "I know Her, I sure know Vicky".
Waikiki was the place to go to for entertainment on special occasions of birthdays, anniversaries and such for our families So it made sense that we, also chose Waikiki on the first day of payday weekends and Hotel Street with it's lively Girl models and recreation activities the next few days, after that we would have to settle for Saimein ( oriental noodle dishes and Beer at Dot's Drive Inn in Wahiawa for the rest of the Month.
